The Northern School of Jazz - a different route into jazz performance

The
Northern School of Jazz provides a practical, inexpensive, alternative route into jazz performance.

We focus on high quality one to one and group teaching - up to 10 hours over the weekend.

The cost is £10 per hour or £30 for the day for group lessons.

Individual lesson fees are negotiable with our tutors, or, you may wish to continue learning with your current instrumental teacher.

It is a practice-based vocational course with a very specific purpose: to prepare you for a life playing jazz.

A degree is not a prerequisite for a professional musician; the Northern School will prepare you thoroughly to enter the profession as a jazz musician.

There are a number of flexible options for studying, tailored to your needs, e.g. you may choose to attend specific hourly classes, or stay for the whole day.

Classes at the weekends will enable students to continue at school or work during the week, and to remain at home, thereby greatly reducing living costs and subsequent debt.

This is a no-frills option for serious students, that gets to the heart of how to play jazz.

We provide individual learning programmes which are monitored and adapted as each student progresses.

We aim to provide a supportive and collegiate atmosphere in which to learn and to find your own voice. As practicing jazz musicians and educators, we have a deep understanding of how to learn to improvise, how to sustain a creative career and how to survive in the ‘real’ world. We emphasise performance and will provide opportunities throughout the year to improvise and perform compositions. Students will benefit from small classes, individual learning programmes and personalised education and support from award winning jazz teachers.
